The Central American country of Belize is sometimes overlooked as tourists head to the sunny coasts of Mexico and lovely Costa Rica instead. But make no mistake! Belize definitely holds its own when it comes to unique travel experiences.
For those who enjoy sustainable eco-adventures and don't mind a bit of humidity and a few bugs, the Belizean rainforest is a must. It's truly a special place that offers unspoiled natural surroundings and unique wildlife sightings.
Not long ago, I had a chance to spend a few days in the Belizean rainforest and stay at an eco-lodge that was built in the center of an ancient Mayan city. While there, I enjoyed fresh coffee and delicious food straight from the nearby farm; I saw how coffee is harvested and roasted, and how the locals’ favorite hot sauces are prepared and packaged; I learned about the healing power of various herbs and trees and got to know more about the great Maya civilization while exploring ancient Mayan ruins.
To top it all off, I went on several safari adventures, chasing jaguars, toucans, and many other fascinating jungle creatures. One of the most fascinating experiences was hearing the howling of black howler monkeys. Oh, wow! Did you know that the sound these monkeys make is the soundtrack used for the Indominus Rex dinosaurs in “Jurassic World?” Yup! The film crew found this monkey howling so creepy that they actually went down there to record it as it fit the beasts so perfectly!
If you are looking for something off the beaten path but not too far from your time zone in North America, be sure to put Belize on your radar! For the most complete experience, you can combine this unique jungle adventure with a few relaxing days at the beach. From history, nature, and wildlife to beautiful coastlines and world class diving sites, Belize truly has so much to offer! So, let's get in touch and start planning your own Belizean getaway! ;-)
