For many European destinations, the shoulder seasons—spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October)—offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and better prices, making them ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The Mediterranean region, however, is most popular in summer for beach vacations.

Keep in mind that northern areas like Iceland and Greenland remain quite cool during shoulder seasons, with temperatures often ranging from 39°F to 50°F (4°C to 10°C). Travelers visiting these regions should prepare for colder conditions and pack accordingly.

Travel documents depend on your destination and nationality. For most travelers visiting the Schengen Area, which includes 27 European countries, you’ll need a valid passport and, starting in late 2026, an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). ETIAS is a simple online travel authorization valid for three years that must be obtained before traveling.

If you plan to visit the UK, you’ll need a separate ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), required from April 2025 for visa-exempt travelers. This online permit is valid for two years.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area; however, many airlines and countries recommend six months’ validity to avoid any travel issues. Always check entry requirements for each country before booking.
